Wide-format print specialist, Leach, has completed a massive four-year project for the Oman Botanic Garden which included designing, printing, and installing over 1000 custom graphic elements West Yorkshire-based wide-format print specialist, Leach, has completed a four-year international project supporting the development of the USD 175m (£132m) Oman Botanic Garden.

The Oman Botanic Garden is an environmental project in Al Khoudh, roughly 35km west of Oman’s capital city of Muscat. It is designed to be the largest botanical garden in the Arabian Peninsula, with the conservation and architectural project developed by global design firms, Grimshaw Architects and Arup.

The attraction is billed as one of the world’s largest botanic garden projects covering 420 hectares, designed to showcase Oman’s biodiversity through a series of natural habitats, educational spaces, and visitor experiences. The garden's collection includes approximately 1,200 species of plants displayed in various habitats such as deserts and monsoon cloud forests.

Leach was appointed to deliver the artwork, print, and installation of over 1000 pieces of bespoke wide-format solutions across the Garden’s visitor spaces, working with project stakeholders in Oman throughout the development.

A key element of the project was creating a visual identity that could be applied consistently across English and Arabic, working closely alongside typesetting and typeface designers, Monotype, to create a bespoke typeface as well as with illustrator, Marcella Wylie, to commission the botanical illustrations.

Leach subsequently produced and installed environmental graphics across the garden’s four principal areas: the Dhofar Mountains Biome, Hajar Mountains Biome, Deserts Pavilion, and Visitor Centre, using specialist materials to accommodate temperatures that exceed 40C.

The project included approximately 100 ECO Vault external interpretation panels, 188 stoved aluminium plant identification labels, 750 door signs, and 28 custom wallpaper installations covering approximately 200sq m. Leach also managed quality control and international logistics, including the photography of items prior to shipment and multiple visits to Oman to support artwork reviews and phased installation.

Kelly Hyde, project lead at Leach, says: “It was a fantastic opportunity to work on such a high-profile, unprecedented project for Leach.

While the scale and complexity brought challenges, being able to work closely with the Oman Botanic Garden team and visit the site to see its progress first hand over the years was incredible.” Leach has undertaken a wide range of print and signage projects throughout its over 100-year history, including for the White House Historical Association, Pepsi, O2, and the Royal Air Force Museum.

Its current print arsenal includes a 3.5m Durst P5 350 HS industrial hybrid printer, which was installed in order to further scale its wide-format print capabilities.
